Too good to last.../Demasiado bueno para que durara..

Being a diabetic, my mother had blood tests run every month, as hers was a type that appears when old, and it has the characteristic that it can suddenly shoot up and cause serious trouble. And it was just a few months after she had been told that she had no more cancer and that she was doing great, that something awkward appeared in the results of the blood tests, showing that she was in trouble again!
But she never told us anything about it this time, as my two sisters were getting married over a period of three months: the youngest for the first time and the one just a year younger than me, was going for the second chance, both of them to their adolescence sweethearts. My mother kept it a secret, as she wanted us all to enjoy such a wonderful occasions in our family life happily and fully.
Once both happy moments were over, the two of us were sitting in the garden enjoying a fine srping evening while we watched Sol play with Laica, our Siberian Husky dog, when she told me that she had had bad news in the last blood test (which of course was not the last one! So she had known it for a period of 4 months already!). Although we had been laughing a few minutes earlier, the moment I heard those words, the smile froze on my face and a dark, deep pain caught me by surprise in the middle of my chest. I already knew even before she spoke the words... "I have cancer again. The doctors have found a few tumours in my liver". And she had never drunk alcoholic drinks!!! What came next needs not be included here.
The years that followed, almost two, were a mixture of feelings and emotions. At times my mother was high-spirited and looking forward to recovery, while at others she felt sad and wanting to give up all the treatmeants (a natural reaction whenever she saw that the tumours were getting bigger in spite of all the invasive therapies on her body).
She once again started with chemeotherapy and rays, but the pain she would have to put with at times could be excruciating. And she bore it all bravely, always.
Once, I went with her to visit her oncologist, a friend of mine from the club whom I had known since we were kids but hadn't seen in a while. Once the appointment was over, he drove us back home, and with the excuse of dropping me off at the supermarket, I left with him in the car. Until then, I had thought that the illness as being controlled even though it could not be operated on.
But what he said to me then, not only brought new light on what was really going on but also deep shadows, pain, anguish and sadness.

abrazo y perdon.

Dearest Jeannie,
My heart goes out to you as I know what it's like to have all this pain.
Our story's are very similar as I was also never told about my Mum's illness and that she was dying until a day before she went, she also didn't want me to know, knowing that I had just started my life here in Brasil and that I was so happy.
This is the true genuine unselfish Mother's love for their child - that our Mum's didn't want us to know seeing us so happy.
Muchos Besos my dear friend, I look forward to your next posts.

Besos!

Dearest Donnie, our life stories are so similar in some points, and our mom;s illness is one of them, though unlike you, I went through all of it and saw how it slowly ate her up inside... something I don't even wish to my worst enemy. Love you lots, Donnie!!!

Dear Jeannie,
Yes at the time I felt so terrible and guilty at not knowing, and not being there for my Mum, but looking back now I can see that in some way it was a good thing as I never saw her ill, all my memories are of the good times together and our daily telephone conversations.
That 100% connection, love and support is something I miss every single day of my life.
Muchos Besos my dear friend!

Dearest Donnie, it is difficult to say what w=is better: if not to have seen how the illness consumes them but still be there for them, or to be ignorant of what is going on and be able to keep the good memories alive. I have been through too much with mum's illness, and all my memories are the worst, which I will be including in my folllowing posts. Keep the good times alive... and cherish them always! Muchos besos!
