and then.../y después...

... after Sol was born, back in April 1998, I felt I already had everything I needed in life, I couldn't be happier! I was happily? married (well at least that was what I felt back then, even if we at times acted as two strangers, we were together, had our differences but nothing that could not be solved... but it wasn't until a long time later that I realized that we were not at all happily married, that only Sol brought light and warmth to my life, as well as my studies, my job and my blood relatives), I had a baby who was the prettiest ever seen, and was about to finish my third degree at college. Then came hard times, as it was not easy going to university in the evenings, after having worked all day, and naturally carrying Sol around with me! But I have already talked about this in my previous post.
Just a couple months after my baby was born. my mum's only brother passed away suddenly. We had been together that evening, and the next thing we knew, his wife was phoning to tell us that Robin had had a massive heart attack and died. The news absolutely devastated the family, but the one who suffered it the most was my mum. He was the only relative older than her that she had left (only 2 years older than her). The months that followed were just too much for her to take, she fainted at school while giving lessons, was diagnosed with diabetes, and only a month later was diagnosed with breast cancer. In just a question of months, what had been a happy life she was having, was completely destroyed.
What called our attention was that the doctors said my mum had to be operated on immediately. And only after the operation had taken place did we understand why: apparently, my mother was a type of cancer carrier who lacked the symptoms of the disease. Because of a very strong emotion (her brother's sudden death), what one day seemed like a minor case of breast cancer, just a few days later was something so huge it had to be taken out then and there!!! My mum was eventually operated on just ten days after she was diagnosed with the tumour, which was supposed to be 2 cm big and turned out to be not one, but three, with the smallest being 6 cm big.
After she was operated on, there wasn't a single weekend that Sol and I didn't go to her house to spend time with her. She went through all sorts of ray and drug therapies a body can take, and some more too ... and not once did she complain about having to go through all of this! I never failed to be by her side, together with my daughter, one of my sisters and my brothers, never giving up on my responsibilities at home (as wife and bread bearer) nor at school, where I had lessons to give, and university, where I had a degree to achieve.
But the following 4 years would be a mixture of joy, happiness, sadness, pain and loss... a lot of it!
And I am sooooooo scared of the word tumour!!!!!

Dearest Jeannie :)
I can relate totally to what you went through with your Dear Mum...
I lost my own Dear Mum to cancer and it is a loss I can never deal with, the emptiness and huge hole that that she left in my life after a lifetime of providing me with so much love and total support in absolutely everything, without fail.

4 years before that we lost my Aunt (my Mum's Sister) to breast cancer, she battled it for 5 years in total, having one breast removed, then the other until finally it had spread elsewhere. Me and My Mum took her to hospital every day of her chemotherapy treatment and I remember how scared we were and how terrified she was every single day.

I too am very scared of the word tumour, as I know that cancer is in my family, but we must live our lives without fear and live each minute to the fullest!!

Muchos Besos my Dear Friend!
I look forward to your next posts!

There is a great deal of cancer in my family. I lost my father to it when I was fourteen. As I've grown older, I've found myself being afraid of an early death like my father's. I found that making healthy lifestyle choices and working with my doctor to get the necessary screenings has helped me to feel like I have measure of control. But the most important thing I believe I can do is cultivate in myself a respect and appreciation for life and live each moment honestly and completely. In this way, I hope to find myself at peace with whatever fate awaits me. This life is precious, but all things must pass. . .
