La ruptura/ Final break-up

As I was telling you in my previous post, the two months that followed were really perfect... we were able to light the flame of love again, we were happy and were the perfect family. Or at least, that is what I thought.

One afternoon in August, when I went to the gynechologist for a check-up, as my mother's cancer made it a must for me to be more careful as regarded my health, while she was getting ready to start with it, I explained to the doctor why I was there as well as telling her that I had not had my period a few days back but that it didn't surprise me, as it had happened once before when I had been through an extremely stressful situation.

Just in casem the doctor was extremely careful and soon confirmed what I was not at all ready to hear... that i was pregnant, and that according to the days, she could calculate the pregnancy to be of about six weeks. Then and there all the studies I should have had made could not be carried out, but instead she sent me to have the tests that are normally carried out plus a breast ecography, so that we could be sure that there were no bad surprises there awaiting.

I had all the etsts run, and the technician who did the breast scan also did one of my abdomen, and I could see my little Sophie for the first time, when she was just 7 weeks old.

Now was the time to tell P. about the good news.. and naturally, because of the great moment we were going through, I was absolutely certain that he would not ask, as he had when I had broken the news of the first pregnancy, who the father was...

But I was SO wrong!! When I told him that we were expecting a baby, the way in which he reacted was that of a total stranger to me! The first thing he said was that it was impossible. After that, he went nuts, and started saying that he was unwell emotinally, physically, economically (without a job since... uufff, since I had met him??), and all the other "ly"'s that you can think of!

Honestly, I was flabbesghasted at the sight of the person who was standing in front of me... because I couldn't recognize him as the man with whom I had shared my life for the past 15 years... this was P. no longer but an absolute stranger, more still after the chat that followed.

When he had finally calmed down, he told me that this was not right... and he asked me what I was going to do. I guess you will be able to imagine my face of horror mixed with surprise when he asked this. What was I going to do???

And with a voice and manner as cold as he could have, as I had never ever seen him before, he asked me what I was going to do with the baby. Those words echoed inside my head for what seemed ages, while I was trying to get my breath back after such sudden and unexpected blow. What was he talking about???? Was he crazy???

When I was able to come back from the initial shock, I tried talking to him with as much calm as possible. And I explained to him that what I was about to say was always speaking hypothetically, as I had a decision taken already. So I went on to telling him that, supposing I decided not to have my baby (which naturally was completely out of the question as it had NEVER even crossed my mind!!!), very little time after I would be asking him to leave, as I would not be able to bare the sight of him for having suggested I didn't carry on with my pregnancy. And that if, on the other hand, I decided to have my baby, that would mean that he would leave. So that one way or the other, he (P.) would not be in my life any longer. Naturally, I explained, one did not have to be too smart to know what option I had chosen: I was keeping my baby.

And right them and there he told me that I would regret the choice I had made, and it took us only two weeks to do all the necessary paperwork (not without a few bad moments of quarrels in which we talked about who kept what although the bread bearer had always been me), and he finally left home forever on October 1st, 2002 (well... almost forever... but that is material for some other post!)

Retomando.../ Going back...

Many months back, I had been writing about my mother's death, and though I had wanted to keep on writing about what happened after that as regards my by then still husband, there was something else that cropped up and I preferred writing about.

When my mother passed away, I had almost to implore my husband to leave the beach to take care of Sol... which he had not done during the whole summer, and my little angel had to put up with seeing how her dearest grannie was being devastated by this fucking illness.

Naturally, he arrived the same day my mom died... impossible for him to make it sooner when he was just a few hundred kilometres away from here. But he not only took his time to come, but was not with me during this painful moment, he didn't ever ask me if I needed anything nor how I was feeling.

After the wake and burial, to which he obviously did not assist, I stayed at what had been my mom's house for the following 10 days, putting things and stuff in order, with my two brothers and two sisters, keeping each other company and trying to find solace and strength in one another, but specially, stayig away from whom I no longer felt as my husband.

When I went back home, I did it more for Sol than any other reason, and it was time I got back to work... I could not be forever away from school... I needed to start occupying my head on something productive.

When I got back home, Sol was soooo sad!!! She cried every single night, reason why we both hugged each other and cried ourselves to sleep, trying to find solace in each other for our loss, a loss which seemed impossible to tolerate. Not once did my husband ask if we needed anything nor did he offer his comfort.

After a few months of living this way, and because I was really tired of it, I told P. that I wanted a divorce, that we just didn't get along any longer, that he had not been there for the third most important moment in my entire life (the two previous ones had been during Sol's pregnancy and then when I had recieved my degree at university, when he said he would not be coming because he did not like to sing the national anthem... I am speechless). Y told him I could tolerate it no more and that it was really harming me to live with a stranger in the house.

His first reaction was to become furious, chucking things around the house and then telling me that if I wanted to separate that was fine with him, to get my stuff together and to leave, because he would be staying in the house with Sol. Then came the never ending crying, saying he was so sorry for having let me down on so many occasions... begging to please give him a chance, for us to give it a try.

Because I know that I loved him, and because I needed to give it a try for Sol, we decided, after talking it over for several days, that we would give it a chance.

And the two months that followed seemed like a honeymoon... and like any honeymoon, they got to an end,,, and in our case, in the most horrible way that existed.

Y este fin de semana.../ And this weekend...

Fuerte, no?

...the girls' father had said he would be coming to pick up Sol on Friday afternoon, to take her to spend a few days of her winter holidays with him.

My daughters already had plans for Friday, as a few of my hockey team mates (my daughters of the heart as they enjoy calling themselves, as I double them in age) were going to take them out to lunch and to the cinema while I met a friend of mine, so that I arranged with their dad to pick Sol up after 5.

But one thing led to the other, and after many telephone calls, he ended up saying that his day had become complicated and thsu would be coming to fetch her on Saturday. Needless to say, this made Sol extremely sad, but after some hugging and lots of talking, I could make her understand that things did not always work out as we had planned them And het answer was very harsh: "Everything you plan works out and you keep your word... why can't dad ever do the same?" Hard, uh?

On Saturday morning he came by the house to pick her up... but Sophie was nowhere near... according to her, she does not recognize her father, who does not understand that his daughters need his visits to be constant... in Sol's case, even though she is older, she cries and becomes very sad, while Sophie reacts in a completely different way: she directly blocks him out of her life. Speaking about hard??

During the day, Sophie and I played a lot.. we prepared panckakes for tea, and she phoned one of her uncles to invite him, his wife and son to come over. So that we spent an afternoon with the family. Sophie played a lot with her cousin Joaco, who is 12 years old, and she scolded him so much and made him do and play everything she wanted... he si such a nice boy, that he allowed the little one to do whatever she wanted.

When night fell and it was time for them to leave, they asked Sophie if she would like to sleep over at their house... and she didn't give it a second thought!!

"Come on, mum, hep me pack to go to my uncle's house for a sleepover!!" She was so happy that she would be going!!! I helped her to prepare her bag, and in a few minutes she was ready to leave. My sister-in-law told me to take advantage of being on my own for once to go out. unfortunately, the person I knew I would like to meet could not make it for stronger reasons. So that I satyed at home... but I had such a great time!!!

I had one of those long, warm, relaxing baths which I hadn't had in such a long time because of the lack of time, then I got into bed with my laptop, and wrote for hours on end, with no one interrupting me just for the fun of doing so. I chatted online with a few of my friends living abroad, and when I saw the time, I could believe it was 4 am!!

I slept soooo well... and then I dedicated my Sunday to watching movies I had been meaning to watch for so long never being able to do so... "Wise Guy", "cast Away", "Big Bully", "Stardust", one after the other...

And by the time Sophie got back home at around 7 pm, I had been able to carry out so many activities that give me pleasure!

In spite of having missed my daughters, I really needed that time for myself, to feel that my space was not being invaded... being myself, at my own pace, and keeping myself company on a Saturday night. And having fun all along the way!

Mis escritos/ My writings (II)

"When that kiss, which seemed neverending finally finished, because they separated their mouths to at last open their eyes and look at each other slowly, he could notice a strange spark in her eyes, one he had not seen in such a long time, which had never appeared in the eyes of any of the women he had been with in the past times, all of those who were just a name, an age and a place of residence in the long list of contacts he had. He noticed that they shone in a way none of the other women's had, neither after the kisses he had thought had been so hot nor after the wild sex that had followed. But he had not felt this way with any of them either, so happy, so fullfilled and at the same time so scared. What was going on with him?

And once again he doubted... he didn't know whether he should carry on, because he had already discovered that it wouldn't be that easy to dump her after their bodies joined and shared the pleasure of the touching and caressing and passion...

But it was too late... it was impossible to go back in time, and although his inner voice was shouting at him to get away from there, that he could still make it safely, his legs felt too heavy to move, pinning him down to a future which he was not ready for, a story which he did not wish to be a part of, because he didn't want to feel well, he shouldn't feel real pleasure, he couldn't fall in love nor feel anything near love, neither with this woman nor with anyone else. What was it with this woman who, just the looking into her eyes, made him feel he had finally found happiness?

They looked at each other and got lost in thoughts of their own, in silence, enjoying what they saw in front of them...

And then they started kissing again, this time more passionately. Their lips searched each other's, desperately, opening up and letting each other in, to take for themselves all the passion they had inside, playing with their tongues, looking for each other's, licking in despair, with very strong desire, while their hands caressed the other's body, recognizing it, wanting it, feeling it...

And as abruptly as they had started kissing they stopped... and once again they stared at each other, but this time there was a certain complicity which said it all: both were ready to give in to the other, they had no doubts about it.

And that was how, without speaking a single word, the walked hand in hand towards her bedroom, where an enormous bed, very femenine and properly made, was awaiting and quietly inviting them to give in to each other completely, without thinking about a tomorrow, just feeling each other.

Then and there was when he would remember began the point of no return..."

Mis escritos/My writings

What you will be reading now is nothing more than a very quick draft of ideas that flowed into my mind last night while I was trying to fall asleep. Any resemblance with reality is mere coincidence. I would like to write a novel on this one of these days, but I know I do not want to do so today... maybe some day, when I have finished working on the other two (which I have finished writing but which I am still trying to polish).

"He awaited till everyone had left the house. It was the first time that they would be meeting face to face... and he was very nervous, needy of holding in his arms a woman which he only knew through his laptop's monitor, through a webcam which so many times distorts images.

They had planned it meticoulously.... once the damned phrase that would condemn him for life had left his lips: "I want to meet you. I need to know you". And once it was spoken, there was no going back. Because he really longed to have her in his arms, but he could not tolerate to have shown his weak side, almost imploring her that they meet.

This woman awoke something in him that he had not felt in such a long time, something he believed was dead and existed no longer. He had learnt to love without feelings, without needing to relate with the opposite sex, because his last experience with his former wife had been so painful... and he had vowed never ever again to fall in love, so that he would be able to avoid so much pain.

But suddenly, one afternoon, this woman appeared, someone whom he listed in his group od contacts with a name, a number representing her age and her place od residence. he had opted long ago to label people this way, specially all the women who entered his life, as in this way that is the only thing they would be... a label, never a person. Thus it would be much easier to make use of them and then dump them.

And here he was, this midday, waiting for her to arrive so that he could surrender to het completely. He phoned her to know how long she would take to get home. It was just a few minutes... no more.

...

And when they loooked into each other's eyes, the seriousness with which he had greeted him disappeared completly, and they hugged warmly in a log embrace, and kissed each other sweetly, both closing their eyes and letting go... And that was when he understood that he was lost, that in spite of how hard he tried not to hold on to this woman, although he tried his best not to become dependent of her, he would never be able to achieve it, because she had been able to bring down, through just her warm embrace and sweet kiss, the wall which he had so much made an effort to build around his heart throughout the years, so as to never suffer for love again. He was a guy who had to be alone, in spite of how much he wished he did not have to. He shouldn't and couldn't be here now, at this precise moment of his life. Still...

And he cursed his bad luck... but gave in to the divine pleasure of sex...

Esta mañana.../ This morning...

This morning I woke up when the girls brought our breakfast on a tray, so that we could share it on and in my bed, just as they have been doing every single morning since the holidays started. They were ready to start the day sharing and chatting, not that I have been that much of good company for them lately!

I got up to put on the kettle for my "mate" (something the girls do not do because of some previous bad experiences with very hot water, so that they bring the flask with the luke warm water left from the previous night), and I looked out the window to discover that, once again, the day was cloudy.

I went on with the morning ritual or routine, in which once the kettle was on the stove, I go out to the back garden to greet Greta and play a while with her before giving her breakfast, while I smoke a cigarette. And it was during this morning routine, still carried out in spite of being on holidays, that I looked around me... and I did not like what I saw.

I saw a very badly kept garden, untidy and uncared for, just as I have been these past few days, during which I haven't even taken off my PJ's... thus, I haven't even gone out to the street.

I saw a grey and cloudy sky... and I remembered that, even if it is not shining brightly in our faces, the sun is there...

And I realized that I am also here... in spite of my reluctance and unwillingness, of my introspection, my questioning and lack of feeling like doing things...

I went back to the kitchen to get the water for my "mate', I then went to my bedroom where the girls were waiting for me in my bed so that we could have breakfast together... and I smiled, as I haven't smiled in so many days... and it felt good and made me feel good. We had breakfast, we chatted, made plans for lunch and organized activities for the morning and the rest of the day... and I felt happy.

Because I was not going to allow these sad winter days take over me and my feelings more than what they already had, because my daughters are a treasure which I had ignored a bit because I was being so self-centred and feeling sad, because I felt lonely.

I had a shower, got dressed and put on perfume; I danced with the girls until we could take it no more, we laughed until our bodies and faces ached, and we played with dough... it is so much fun to have fun, to stop looking inside myself and looking outside and seeing I am not alone, that my daughters are my priority today and always... and smiling and laughing and dancing and having lots of fun!!!

Letting life flow... =)
And allowing it to bring you home when the time is right, B.

And naturally, phoning Serafín, the handyman, to take care of the garden!
