I have always worked in two schools (one in the mornings and another one in the afternoons) and I have given private lessons as well. When Sol, my eldest daughter, was born, and until she started preschool to which she had to go all day because it was in English and in Spanish, I decided I would not work in the morning until this happened, so that I could spend time with her.
But when Sol became 5 years of age, and was already in preschool, Sophie was born. And that is why I decided, in spite of the hard economic times, to spend my mornings with her until she also started preschool.
I have been teaching at S.C.S., a bilingual school in Belgrano, for the past 25 years. At school, the staff is given a gift or prize every 5 years on the anniversary of its founding, every April 30th.
When Sol was born, I should have gone to receive my 15th year prize, but Sol had been born just a few weeks before, and I honestly did not feel like putting her through all the stress of having hundreds of students shouting at her because of their exhilaration at seeing her. So, I didn't go to the mass, nor the celebration or prize giving. The same thing happened when Sophie was born 5 years later... i was supposed to get a prize for my 20 years as a teacher at school, but as she was born just a week later, I was soooooo huge, that I preferred to stay at home.
And this year, when I should be getting a prize for my 25 years years of teaching at school, I can't go!!! This time no pregnancies nor births are to blame as before... Though my friends and I have always fooled around saying that I am supposed to keep on having a child every five years, but that is not so this time.
As from tomorrow, I am going back to working in the morning, and back to teaching in Kindergarten!!! I am starting at Saint Michael's School as an English K-4 teacher. And I am fascinated!!! I love working in Kindergarten (bah, actually I love teaching) and at last I have been able to start working again mornings and afternoons, now that Sophie is at school all day herself too. Later on I will consider whether I will be giving up some of the private lessons I have after school hours so as to be able to spend more time with the girls, which they had already been asking for.
